Phenobarbital is a prescription medication used to control epileptic seizures in cats and dogs. It works by decreasing and stabilizing neuron activity in the brain, helping to reduce the frequency and severity of seizures. Phenobarbital also increases Gamma Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) levels in the nervous system and reduces neurotransmitter activity to lessen nerve stimulation. It can be prescribed as a sole therapy or in combination with other medications as directed by a veterinarian.
